Keep or Return?

Ever since I started having major Rachel Pally lust, I have wanted this dress that has been featured in her Spring 2012 White Label collection on her website, but has not yet been for sale. I have stalked Bloomingdales and Zappos websites weekly looking for this dress, as new items seem to trickle out from the Rachel Pally line weekly. Yesterday, I saw that Zappos finally had the dress, and of course I snapped it up.

Less than 24 hours later (yay Zappos shipping!), I had it on and was really confused. I love the color. I love the fabric. It makes me feel like a Grecian goddess.

On the other hand, I worry people will think I look like a raspberry-colored potato sack.

Here are the quick shots:

In this case, I think I’m going to send it back. I’m trying to stick hard to the “holy sh*t” rule, where I must put something on and go “holy sh*t, I look and feel AMAZING!” Too much uncertainty here to absorb the large price tag.

So what say you? Grecian goddess or raspberry potato sack?

Nawl girl. That’s gotta go back!

    • Emmie

Done! I trust your opinion :)

  • Misty @ The Family Math

Honestly? I think it looks like you need a smaller size…

    • Emmie

Perhaps, but I don’t think it would be any better. Sending back.

  • Jackie

Honestly, it looks like you are at a graduation ceremony. It does make your legs look great but I’m sure you could find something more flattering that does the same thing.

    • Emmie

OMG, I totally see the graduation ceremony look. Thanks for the legs compliment :) I’m sending it back.

  • RunLisaRun1

I agree, it looks a bit to big, try a smaller size perhaps. I love the colour on you though!

    • Emmie

thanks – love the color too, but I can’t keep it if I’m unsure. Sending back.

  • Rachael

    • Emmie

      done – it’s going back!

  • Cassie

Definitely no. I can see the appeal but I don’t think it looks good on you (or even on her for that matter).

That said, it is a perfect color on you!

    • Emmie

sigh – totally know. I had high hopes, but alas they didn’t pan out!

  • missmarisol

IMO it’s not very flattering at all. Gorgeous color but not a keeper.

    • Emmie

      yep, going back.

  • Lori

Pretty color, maybe two sizes smaller. Remember, if you have to ask, you already know deep down inside…

    • Emmie

You’re so right. I already know deep down it’s not right.

  • Alana Jo @ Not.So.Big.Jo

Take it back. It is a pretty color but the cut does nothing for you. Your new figure is too pretty to hide under this.

  • Rachel

I agree. Send it back. It’s doing nothing for you. : / I honestly don’t think it’s doing any favors for the model either.

  • Steph

Gotta go back. BUT it does look comfy and that color is fierce on you!

  • Heather

I think this is one of those dresses that looks perfect in a still photo, but doesn’t translate to actual wear.

That said, I freaking love this color on you. And, that length is insanely flattering for you as well. That dress in a different shape would be a definite keeper.

  • Tammy

I have to agree with everyone else – it should be returned. It is shapeless even on the model. Plus, it you didn’t just love it immediately, then you never will. I hope you can find something else in that color, though!

  • Becca

The sleeves seem kinda awkward… like in a weird place. If you could belt it, I think it’d be a keeper, but I don’t know how that would work with those sleeves. Too bad!! :o(

  • Vanessa

Not a keeper, sorry. I don’t like it on the model either. Though ditto the legs comment – I’m jealous! Do you lift weights? Your calves look so toned! :)

  • Michelle

It’s got to go back, agree with everyone else that it looks huge on you. I think even a smaller size probably wouldn’t work, this style is just not right.

  • Lyn @ Life Lyn Style

hi Emily! I love so many outfits that you present to us… but definitely not this one. I agree to send it back.

  • MarySF

I think it’s very striking– very Grand Dame– but you’re too young for it. Somewhere Judi Dench is wishing it came in turquoise.

Also, it makes your boobs disappear– the model’s too.

  • natalie

Love the color but it looks like a potato sack poncho. :-/

  • Kim

As much as I empathize with you on coveting an outfit and then it’s a big fail, this dress must go back. It does NOT show all the hard work and progress you have made.

  • Jenni

The dress hits the model below the knee in the photo, and her arm is cinching the waist. I was going to suggest trying with a belt, but upon closer inspection, it seems a belt is not possible because it would restrict your arms. I’m calling shenanigans on the model shot!

  • Betsy

return promptly – you are too pretty to wear that!

  • Leslie George

You have come so far to cover up all your success. It simply makes you look larger. Send it back and the designer should be shot. No woman will be flattered by this dress, not even the pencil thin model!

  • Ann

I agree w/ previous posters. It doesn’t do you justice. You’re making the right decision.

That said, your new job is to find something in that EXACT color, because it is fabulous on you!!

  • Sarah

I’m glad you are sending it back. You are so lovely and this dress isn’t right for you. I will say that I love the hot pink with the yellow shoes!! You have great style and I love your blog! xoxo

Bottom Line ….if it had a hood it would be the mini skirt Snuggie

    • Emmie

This comment made me snort. Well played!

    • Margy

      That is awesome.

  • Vic

Gorgeous color but no style. Return!

  • Jessica

I agree, it reminds me of a graduation gown.

  • Margy

Look ma, no purple cast! (that probably would have made the outfit!)

  • DizzyD

I actually like this, it just lacks shape, any way of utilizing a belt under the bustline? That would make it worth keeping.
