Plus Size Workout Clothes + Sales

One of the biggest questions I get is about where to find plus size workout clothes. Since many of you have new goals for the new year, I thought it might be a good time to share some resources. I’ve posted about my workout clothes frustration several times, most recently in November 2012.

lola-getts

Lola Getts Active: This is a line of fashionable performance workout apparel that has sizes 14-24. The line appeared this morning on Good Morning America, and they are having an AMAZING deal associated with that.  The regular prices range from $57-$119, the discounted prices on this limited Good Morning America special range from $23-$48 and a flat rate shipping fee. Find the special prices here. The code is GMA, and the deal goes through January 11th.

taffy

Taffy Activewear: Taffy provides plus size workout clothes in sizes 14-24 with a focus on style, fit, and comfort at an affordable price point. They are the Official Sponsor & Preferred Fitness Wear of Miss Plus USA (anyone else want to wear a tiara?) and in addition to finding them online, you can also now find their items in select TJ Maxx and Marshalls stores. They also participated in the FitBloggin’ fashion show last year, which was pure awesome.

old-navy

Old Navy: Old Navy is still a great source of workout clothes since they go to size 30. Some of their sizing is a bit weird, so you might have to try a bit to get it right. Find their plus size workout options here. They are having a sale through the end of today, January 9th.

Enell Sports BrasEnell Sports Bras: I can’t ever talk about workout clothes without talking about ENELL bras. I seriously don’t know if I’d ever have really started working out without finding them. The last thing you want to worry about when working out is your boobs flopping everywhere. With sizes that range roughly from 32C-52G, they provide zero bounce. They’re having a big set of giveaways this month on Facebook by sharing resolutions. Find out more here. Disclosure: I do work with them through my consulting company, but they have not asked or paid for me to mention them. I just couldn’t even imagine my workouts without them.

Where do you buy your plus size workout clothes?

PS: In tiny type because it’s scary to talk about. If you listened to my interview on the Launch Yourself podcast, you may have heard what I’m up to in order to solve my workout clothes dilemmas. While all of these brands are great and fill a huge gap in the plus size workout market, I have certain things I want to see. So, I’m developing my own line. I have no timeline to announce as it’s in its infancy, but just wanted to throw it out there as it’s something I’m really excited about. Things could all fall apart and it might not launch, but you never know until you try, right?

  • Taffy Activewear

Hi Emmie! So excited to be a part of Miss Plus USA and, of course FitBloggin’

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

      You all are awesome!

  • Curvy Yogi

How funny, I JUST wrote about where I get my favorite yoga clothes. Bit of a combination of places, but Old Navy is one of them.

  • KpageNB

I was on the Zulily site this morning and they have plus size workout gear on there right now at great prices.

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

Yes! They have some from Taffy as well. My only problem with Zulily is the no returns policy. I ordered something that was at least 2 sizes too small and they said they’d accept the return as a one-time courtesy but that’s all.

      • KpageNB

I’ve never bought clothes from them (so far only shoes and craft supplies), so that is good to know.
        Thanks!

  • Becca

Way to go and design your own plus size workout line! That is very excited. I have found some things at Lane Bryant, but not a very big selection that are actually practical.
    Thanks again!

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

Thanks :) Yes, and Lane Bryant is having an activewear sale right now also I think.

  • Jodi Geiger

Thank you so much for the blog post! Their certainly is a fit for everyone! Best of luck on your upcoming venture!

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

Thanks Jodi – congrats on GMA!

  • JenM

Emmie, what can you tell me about the fit/sizing on LolaGetts and Taffy? I see both go to a 24, but I’m a large 24 with boobs and a tummy. I wear a 24 in a lot of stuff, but there are brands/styles I definitely need a 26 in. I’m very self-conscious and about to start going to a cross-fit group full of skinny people, so the last thing I want is to feel like I’m stuffed into my clothes :) The active shirts I’ve gotten lately from ON have just NOT worked for me though and I’m getting really frustrated trying to find something!

That’s AWESOME that you’re designing your own line! I can’t wait!

    • Taffy Activewear

      Hi Jen!
It’s Katie from Taffy! our size 24 fits a 54-48-57
We have a good return policy if it does not work out! I would suggest the Modern Scroll Tunic or the Essential Short Sleeve tops + Essential Pant http://www.shoptaffy.com/activewear/tops.html Make sure you use the code FREESHIP15 to get an extra 15%of and free shipping! Happy Shopping and be proud at Cross-Fit!

      • JenM

Thanks!! Will have to go check it out :)

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

I can fit into the 24s of Lola Getts and Taffy, but they’re a little tight for my comfort zone at this moment. My problem with activewear (and clothes in general) is that I have a really long torso and need extra length on the shirts – but I don’t want to look like I’m swimming in clothes either! I’m 5’10 – I think if you had a normal proportioned torso or were shorter, they might work well. As Katie from Taffy mentioned here, they make returns easy – as does Lola Getts. You never know until you try!

      • JenM

Thanks! I’ll have to go ahead and check them out :) I’m short (5’4″) but I like my shirts long because I’m ubber self-conscious of my belly (which is especially prominent in the tighter pants I usually prefer to workout in). I tried the short sleeve active shirts from ON (they had some last year that were a different fabric that I LOVED) and found the 3x too small, but the 4x literally comes to my knees! lol! Fail for me! But I still LOVE the compression pants!

        • Lola

          Hi Jen,
If you go yo our site or the GMA sale you can see our sizing chart and fit video. We understand your concern that’s why are tops are a bit longer. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
          XOXO Lola

  • Melissa Caldwell

There is also http://www.Junonia.com, they go as high as a 6x oon some of their items.

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

Yes, I purchased from Junonia when I was a size 34. I’m not a huge fan of their styles, but for comfortable, quality clothes that go to a 6x, they fill a big need!

  • PerfectImperfect

I heard on the “Launch Yourself” podcast that this is something you are hoping to address — looking forward to hearing more.

I buy most of my workout clothes at Target. Enell is my go-to running bra, but for other sports I also like Moving Comfort.

The Taffy stuff at the Fitbloggin’ fashion show was so cute!

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

Thanks Jen! I used to love Target’s workout clothes, but they stopped doing plus sizes in the Champion C9 line. Boo!

    • Lola

With the GMA sale time try Lola Getts!

  • Lindsay @ Lindsay Weighs In

I totally read the tiny type, and that’s really exciting! I’m so happy for you! :)

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

Thank you Lindsay! One day I’ll be ready to share more in big type!

  • http://manifestyourself.com/ Kimberly Whittaker

I listened and I was so excited! :) I shared the interview in my link love post today… I couldn’t help myself. lol

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

      Thank you!!!

  • http://www.laurieappleby.com/blog.html Laurie

That is so exciting Emily! In your line, can you take into consideration the TALL plus size gal ;)

    • Taffy Activewear

      Love that idea!

    • Lola

      Laura,
Lola Getts already does. WE have longer pants and our fit model is 5’10″.

  • Kara Ferguson

I usually buy my active wear from Old Navy, or Danskin stuff from Walmart because the prices are great and the fit is good. I’ve seen Taffy on Zulily and have been so tempted, but I haven’t bought anything yet.

    • Taffy Activewear

Let us know if we can help Kara! Even though we sell often on Zulily we can offer competitive pricing on our website. Email us at info (@) shoptaffy (dot) com and we can help find you the best pricing!

Hi Kara!! :) Someone I know in real life! OMG!

I fell in love with Lane Bryant’s yoga pants and capris. They are soooo comfortable. I used to just grab whatever t-shirt and sweat pants fit and go though.

  • Mary @ A Merry Life

ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!? You are developing your own line? That is so awesome! I’m excited for you, even if you put it in small type!

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

      hahaha, thanks!!!

  • http://www.losingitforgood.weebly.com/ April

I just found your blog, and I really appreciate you sharing your journey. I am beginning mine, and it is inspiring to see that it is possible. From one Kentucky girl to another, thank you.

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

Thanks so much, April! Whereabouts in Kentucky are you?

      • http://www.losingitforgood.weebly.com/ April

I’m in Eastern KY between Morehead and Ashland.

  • Rubytuesday

I just bought some plus size workout clothes at Kohls (online) and was very happy, great prices.

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

      Good to know!

  • Christine

I am excited about you starting you own line of workout clothes. Here are some of my wants, needs, and desires. 1. More color. It seems that everything is black. 2. Skirted workout bottoms. I love the one pair I have. It covers my hinny and tummy bludges. Perfect for riding my bike. I don’t feel like my rear is out there for everyone to see. 3. A dry-fit type of fabric that feels kind of cottony. Not slick knit. Think soft. 4. Sleeveless tops where the enell bras don’t show.

    • Christine

      Oh and affordable.

    • Christine

      And light weight for summer.

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

Hi Christine – Thanks for the suggestions! I know I have a few things in the works that will match some of these :) I wondered if you could send me a photo of the skirted workout bottoms you have? If you have a photo when you’re wearing them, that’d be great (and also let me know your height). My email is emmie (at) authenticallyemmie (dot) com. Thanks!

  • Jody R. Goldenfield

So exciting for you!!!!! Yes to that! It is needed!

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

      Thanks Jody!

  • Abby

Hi Emmie! Listed to Launch and just caught up on your blog. Congrats! So much has been happening for you lately. Yay Emmie! Ok, so my suggestion is related to fit and explanation of fit when you launch. I’d love to see the models measurements and sizes of clothes next to the items. Also, if possible could you put the same clothes on different shapes and heights? So, let’s say you design a cropped yoga pant and a tunic. Maybe one model is 5′ 11″ and more apple shaped and another is 5′ 6″ and more hour glass and another is 5′ 2″ and pear shaped. Even if you just put the measurements of the models next to the pics and included the level of stretch/give per item, that would be awesome.

I think use also matters. I like workout clothes to be soft and comfy as I wear them as lounge clothes too. So maybe a rating on intensity or sweat absorption. And last but not least, style. You have awesome style. I would definitely check out your line. I want something I feel attractive in. I am not a fan of block colors and boring. Interesting prints and colors make workout clothes fun. And yeah, some slick basic blacks too always help.

    Good luck! :)
    Abby

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

Hi Abby! Thanks so much for the suggestions – I’ve made notes of them. I agree that seeing the items on different size/shape models is optimal. I’m working go try to incorporate more of a fashion sensibility into items, but then I also have to remember that I’m dealing with a limited number of pieces that have to work on so many different bodies for so many different styles, uses, and fit preferences. Hard to achieve balance!

      • Abby

You know, you have such a devoted fan base that you may only need to use one “model” for each item with measurements/fit and then allow folks in the review area to post pics with their own size/measurements. That helps me a lot on Davids’s Bridal and other sites that allow photo uploads. You will figure it all out. Can’t go wrong with black pants and any colors for tops. Even tees as someone suggested. I would totally by your tees. Good luck chica! You got this! :)

  • Lea

Emmie, thanks for sharing these – I’ve found a few great Taffy items at TJ Maxx so will definitely try more.

    • Taffy Activewear

Hi Lea, So happy you found some Taffy you love at TJ Maxx! We are so happy to be with them, especially on the West Coast!

  • SassySarah

eeeehk! that is **BIG** (shhh) news!?!;) you are so talented & have such a great eye that i think that this would be totally awesome!! and you know it is still in the early stages, but even if you were to change your mind down the road or pause the project – the fact that you dream big is really inspiring and makes me want to explore everything that i can! loveit!!

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

      Thank you so, so much!

  • Kendall Walker

Congrats on starting your own line! I’ve been hovering on the outskirts of your journey :-) I too, am on my own (aren’t we all in some way).

I’ve gotten to the point where I live at the gym and know what I like to wear – crop leg, tight, stretchy on the bottom while bigger and a bit loose on the top. I like getting printed tees from the mens section at Walmart for the “room”. Problem is the neck – Vneck is what I really like but have never really found the right fit – that is unless I get the plain white ones by Hanes – NOT. I want to cover the booty, but don’t like things tight around my neck = ugh. Looking forward to your “been there, done that, know what I’m talking about” line ;-)

    • http://www.authenticallyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

Thank you! And thanks for letting me know what your problems and preferences are – we’re all a little different, but I’m totally with you on these.

  • Susie

Thanks for this post Emmie! It makes such a difference when you can buy good-quality, comfortable, stylish work out clothes. There’s an online shop at http://www.virtushop.com.au that also does a fantastic range of activewear and outdoor clothing. They’re based in Australia/New Zealand but do ship internationally, including to the US. They do clothes in sizes 12-24 (although their sizes run large – I’m usually a size 26 and their XL clothes fit perfectly or even a little roomy). I would definitely recommend checking our their range too – I’ve bought a stack of gym clothes from them recently (I was previously shipping in stuff from the US to Australia) and have been stoked with the products.
