When the dress doesn't fit… wear it as a duster!
The Adam Lippes for Target collection launched, and like any plus size girl dying to get her hands on some affordable fashion, I grabbed a couple items that I could find (boo hiss online only plus options, Target! I had the launch on my calendar and still somehow only snagged a couple pieces I wanted). I love plaid and the graphic nature of the items, but my favorite piece was a plaid shirtdress. It has a high-low hem and I just loved it. But when it came, my fear was realized: it was too snug in the hips. I knew I was on the fringe of the sizing, and the material didn't offer for stretch. Plus, who wants to wear a tight shirt dress?
But unlike some faux shirt dresses, this one actually had buttons all the way down. So I opened it up and contemplated it for a bit. I tried it belted and buttoned at the waist, and it just looked odd. But then I got a black dress in the mail from my Gwynnie Bee subscription that was oh-so-comfy but I didn't like a rhinestone detail on the 3/4 length sleeves. As I stared at the shirt dress and Gwynnie Bee dress sat together on my dining room table where all of my return shipments go, it hit me to try to wear them together. The shirt dress hid the rhinestones on the sleeves, and the black base layer and shorter length gave it more room to shine! So voila: a winning outfit!

I've worn this out a few times now because it's comfortable, easy, and makes me feel polished. People have asked, “where did you get that jacket!?” And then I tell them it's a shirt dress and their mind explodes. Not really because that would be gross, but they do give me a look like I'm bananas. 🙂
